This North Coast tour travels from South Wales through the Scottish Borders and deep into the Highlands, taking in Inverness, the Spey Valley, and the dramatic NC500 route via Caithness and Sutherland, with highlights including John OGroats, Smoo Cave, and scenic coastal drives. It continues through Wester Ross and Gairloch before exploring the Isle of Skyes iconic landscapes, castles, and mountain views, then returns south via Eilean Donan Castle, Glencoe, Loch Lomond, and Fort William, finishing back in South Wales.
Day 1
We depart South Wales and travel north, making our first overnight stop in the Scottish Borders.
Day 2
We continue north through Perthshire, over the Drumochter Pass and into the Spey Valley. We take in the sights of the Highland capital, Inverness, before following the coastal road past Dunrobin Castle, Brora’s white sands, and historical Helmsdale. We then arrive in Thurso for 2 nights.
Day 3
A relaxed morning in Thurso, followed by a visit to Wolfburn Distillery to discover the craft of Scotch whisky. We continue to John O’Groats for photos if time allows, and may also visit the Castle of Mey (subject to opening dates), once a retreat of the Queen Mother, before returning to Thurso.
Day 4
Today we explore a scenic stretch of the North Coast 500, passing dramatic cliffs, rugged headlands, hidden lochs, and deserted beaches. We stop for lunch at Smoo Cave Hotel in Durness before continuing through this wild and beautiful coastline.
Day 5
We head south through Wester Ross, passing Loch Maree, one of Scotland’s most beautiful lochs, before arriving in Gairloch. Here you can enjoy free time in the harbour and take in the Highland scenery before our overnight stay.
Day 6
We travel onto the Isle of Skye, making the most of its dramatic scenery, wildlife, and rich history. Highlights include Portree, Dunvegan Castle (home of the Macleod Clan for over 800 years), and sweeping coastal views of the Cuillin mountains, with an experienced guide helping bring the island to life.
Day 7
We leave Skye and head south, stopping at the iconic Eilean Donan Castle before continuing through Glencoe, “The Weeping Glen”. We enjoy free time in Fort William before travelling along the shores of Loch Lomond, “The Queen of Lochs”, and continue to our overnight stop.
Day 8
After a leisurely breakfast, we complete our journey back to South Wales.
